Books for Review--May 12 (and book/graphic novel review opportunities for publishers)
Oh, that? In the background. Just a kind of super sekret project that popped up.Below the cut you'll find a summation of where and what I'm reviewing these days. I also review for SF Weekly, Washington Post Book World, and Publishers Weekly, but I do not get to pick what I review for them. In any event, it's boring below the cut unless you're an editor or publicist, no doubt...A note about review copies and review opportunities. I get a ton of stuff from most major publishers and from some indie presses. But I'm a little surprised I don't get more indie press stuff, given that I'm sympathetic to the indie press and more than willing to feature stuff on the Amazon book blog. Of the internet review venues, even the least of them listed below gets many thousands of visitors a day. And io9's stats are monstrous, to say the least. There are related benefits, too, in terms of the best-of-year articles I do, the fact that I often serve as a conduit, putting writers in touch with other writers or media outlets, and even sending out copies of stuff I don't review to other reviewers who will cover it.I'm a glutton for punishment in putting out this information, since it just means our house will further disappear under the weight of books, but, hey, this is my life--books. I love 'em, and I want to promote as much cool stuff as possible.Amazon Book BlogAudience: Ardent bibliophiles, as well as random book readers/consumersNeeds: Books and Graphic Novels of all kindsI do features, articles, interviews, and short reviews of books for the book blog, all of which also populate the Amazon Daily Blog. All interviews also populate the sales page for the book in question, resulting in additional value to the author. (A future monthly SF/F e-newsletter to Amazon readers is planned, but this feature is in the formative stages at the moment.) I average: 3 posts a week on SF, Fantasy, Horror, Mystery; 1 post a week on non-genre books (mainstream fiction/nonfiction); 1 post on Graphic Novels and 1 round-up post (Fridays).Amazon Book Blog Friday Night Videos FeatureNeeds: Book VideosEvery Friday night, I will post a video feature pitting one embedded book video against another. These can be book trailers, author interviews, a feature on a particular book, etc. It just has to be YouTube (or otherwise) “embeddableâ€. It would be great to get exclusivity to debut a particular video, although it’s not essential. This is actually an ideal time slot because there is rarely any Amazon book blog posting between Friday night and noon Pacific time on Monday, so it’s the featured attraction for the better part of three days. I hope you’ll consider submitting embed links for this feature.Io9 (part of Gawker.com)Audience: SF/F pop culture consumers, dailyNeeds: SF Artists to Profile, in connection with book covers and graphic novel creatorsMy wife Ann and I do an art column twice a month. It has to focus on a science fiction artist or an artist who has at least some science fiction influence in his or her work. We will be featuring a lot of artists who do book covers and who work in comics/graphic novels. Our definition of “science fiction†is fairly broad. Any books sent to us will be considered for this feature. If you specifically want someone considered, drop us a line.Realms of Fantasy MagazineAudience: Fantasy readersNeeds: Fantasy Books and Graphic NovelsFor this prominent newsstand magazine I do five or six fantasy book reviews and four or five fantasy graphic novel reviews for each quarterly issue. Lead time is rather long so I prefer advance copies.Ecstatic DaysAudience: Bibliophiles of all types, dailyNeeds: Books and Graphic Novels of all kindsMy personal blog pertains to all things literary, and I post images and commentary on all books/graphic novels received. Having your book seen here is just an added benefit of sending me material. I also do reviews specifically for the personal blog. Ecstatic Days consistently out-performs many news and information sites for readership and influence. I am also happy to do give-aways through my blog.Jeff VanderMeerPOB 4248Tallahassee, FL 32315vanderworld at hotmail.com
